Bruce Springsteen's Inspiration
Originally, I wasn't much of a Bruce Springsteen fan. As he gained mega commercial success, particularly with the album "Born in the USA", I enjoyed the songs enough not to turn the radio dial (that often) but I didn't find any real personal resonance with his work. When Bruce's creative path moved into contemporary folk music with the release of his 11th studio album "The Ghost of Tom Joad", the title track caught my attention. I love narrative songs, stories real or imagined, exploring the humanity of ordinary people. Of course, Bruce had always been exploring these themes, I just hadn't been pulled in enough to really listen.
In support of the album, Bruce embarked on a tour composed of smaller venue intimate acoustic gigs. My girlfriend miraculously scored 2nd row seats and the concert instilled an appreciation of Bruce as master craftsman and songwriter. My appreciation of Bruce deepened with his willingness to share the methods of his craft, to channel his success in support of progressive social and political campaigns.
